Kitchen Display (KDS)

Prepare items, modifiers, and notes

Read items in a predictable menu order and keep modifiers and preparation notes visible enough for kitchen work.

Overview

  • KDS displays product quantity, modifiers, item notes, and order notes so preparation details do not have to be inferred from a product name.
  • Items are ordered using the configured Menu Category order and Product order to keep kitchen sequence predictable rather than arbitrary.
  • Kitchen-focus modifier configuration can make preparation-critical choices more prominent.
  • Item-level completion tracks progress inside a larger order and is shared across KDS slots: if the same item is visible on Kitchen and Packing, marking it Done on either screen updates both.

When to use this

  • Use item completion where different items finish at different times, several staff share one ticket, or the same item is visible at more than one preparation/packing station.

Step-by-step

  1. Read quantity and product first.
  2. Check modifiers immediately below the item.
  3. Read item-specific notes before preparation.
  4. Read the order note separately for whole-order instructions.
  5. Mark items Done as they are completed. That Done/Undo state is shared anywhere the same order item is shown. Complete the order card only when this KDS station has finished its own work.

Common mistakes

  • Do not treat an Order Note as if it belongs to only one item.
  • Do not ignore modifiers because the base product name looks familiar.
  • Do not change catalogue ordering merely to fix one temporary kitchen rush; use stable menu ordering that staff can learn.
  • Do not expect KDS Complete to complete another station's card. Item Done is shared, but order-card Complete is specific to each KDS slot.

Troubleshooting

  • If items appear in an unexpected sequence, review Category/Product sort order in Menu settings.
  • If an important option is easy to miss, consider Kitchen focus on the relevant Modifier Group.
  • If an item is Done on one KDS but not another, refresh both screens and confirm they are showing the same Order Item; shared item completion should not depend on the KDS slot.
