Kitchen Display (KDS)
New → In Progress → Done
Move active work through preparation without confusing KDS completion with the wider business order lifecycle.
Overview
- The normal KDS preparation states are OPEN/New, IN_PROGRESS, and COMPLETED, with additional cancellation states where needed.
- Starting preparation changes KDS preparation state; it does not itself mean the order is paid or customer-handoff is complete.
- Completing the KDS card removes it from active preparation, but KDS state remains distinct from the broader Order status/payment status.
- A display configured to Skip preparing stage can shorten the interaction where a separate In Progress state is not useful.
When to use this
- Use Start/In Progress when the kitchen needs to signal that somebody has taken ownership of the work, and Done/Complete only when the displayed preparation is actually finished.
Step-by-step
- Review the new order and timing.
- Start preparation when work begins.
- Complete individual items where item tracking is useful.
- Complete the order when its required preparation is finished.
- Use Undo immediately if completion was accidental and the order is still eligible to be restored.
Common mistakes
- Do not press Complete just to clear visual clutter.
- Do not assume KDS Complete means a payment was captured.
- Do not expect Undo to reopen a business-completed CLOSED order; KDS Undo only restores eligible active preparation state.
Troubleshooting
- If an order cannot be restored, it may no longer be an active OPEN business order.
- If an order card does not move after you change its status, refresh KDS and confirm the change was saved.
