Modifier groups and options

Build required and optional choices, control selection limits, duplicate quantities, prices, display order, and kitchen emphasis.

Overview

  • Modifier Groups represent a set of choices attached to products, such as Bagel choice, Milk, Extras, Sauces, or Cooking preference.
  • Each group has Minimum selections and Maximum selections. A minimum above zero makes the customer/staff choose enough options before the selection is valid.
  • Allow duplicate options lets the same modifier be chosen more than once, with an optional maximum duplicates-per-option limit.
  • Each Modifier Option has its own name, price adjustment, and display order.
  • A Modifier Option can be reused in more than one Modifier Group. When the same underlying option is reused, changing its name or normal price changes that shared option everywhere it is linked.
  • Kitchen focus can make selected options from an important group stand out on KDS for preparation staff.

When to use this

  • Use a Modifier Group when several products reuse the same structured choice.
  • Use selection rules to model required choices such as one bagel type, or optional extras such as up to three add-ons.

Step-by-step

  1. Open Menu → Modifier Groups and choose Add modifier group.
  2. Give the group a clear name.
  3. Set Minimum and Maximum selections to match the real ordering rule.
  4. Enable duplicate options only if selecting the same option multiple times makes operational sense.
  5. Enable Kitchen focus for choices that kitchen staff should spot immediately.
  6. Add Modifier Options with any price adjustments.
  7. Drag options into the desired display order and save that order.
  8. Link the Modifier Group to the relevant Products.
  9. When reusing an existing Modifier Option in another group, remember it stays the same shared option rather than becoming an independent copy.

Common mistakes

  • Do not set Minimum selections to 1 for a genuinely optional group.
  • Do not set a Maximum lower than the Minimum.
  • Do not enable duplicates for choices like Bagel type where selecting the same option twice has no useful meaning.
  • Do not create separate copies of a common Modifier Group for every product unless the rules/options really differ.
  • Do not edit a reused Modifier Option expecting the change to affect only one group; create a separate option when the name or price truly needs to differ.

Troubleshooting

  • If checkout says a required choice is missing, check the group's Minimum selections.
  • If customers can select too many options, review Maximum selections and duplicate settings.
  • If an option price is wrong on a marketplace order, review the modifier's marketplace price override as well as its normal price adjustment.
  • Removing a reused Modifier Option from a group removes that group link; it does not necessarily mean the option disappears from every other group that uses it.
  • If the kitchen keeps missing an important option, consider enabling Kitchen focus for that group.
