Understand automatic Customer Group discounts
Know why selecting a customer can change the order total without a cashier manually choosing Discount.
Overview
- An active Customer Group can have a Discount rate greater than zero.
- When the selected customer belongs to such a group, MiniTill can calculate the order-level customer-group discount when the order is synchronized.
- This is separate from a cashier-selected Discount Type. The order records metadata identifying the Customer Group discount source.
- Removing/changing the customer can therefore change the order's customer-dependent discount.
When to use this
- Use Customer Group discount for an ongoing entitlement that follows the customer, such as a subscriber/member discount.
Step-by-step
- Configure the Discount rate on the Customer Group.
- Assign the customer to that group.
- Select the customer in POS before payment.
- Review the recalculated totals before Pay.
- Do not add a second manual Discount unless an additional promotion is genuinely intended and allowed.
Common mistakes
- Do not tell staff to manually select a duplicate 10% discount for every member if the Customer Group already provides it.
- Do not assume changing Customer Group affects historical completed-order totals.
- Do not confuse group Discount rate with point redemption.
Troubleshooting
- If the group discount is missing, check that the customer is selected, the group is active, and its Discount rate is above zero.
- If the order total changes after swapping customers, inspect Customer Group discounts before assuming there is a pricing error.
