Customer Groups: earn rates, discounts, and redemption
Use groups for reusable customer-level rules such as earn rate, automatic discount, redemption permission, and default assignment.
Overview
- Customer Groups are Business-level and reusable across Stores.
- Each group can set Earn rate (%), Discount rate (%), Allow point redemption, Active state, Default state, and Sort order.
- The Default group is assigned when a customer is created without another explicit group.
- Only active groups are normally selectable for new assignments. The default group is kept active by the loyalty defaults logic.
- Lower sort-order values appear earlier in group lists.
When to use this
- Use groups for stable customer types such as Standard, VIP, Staff, Wholesale, or Subscription members when their loyalty/discount rules differ.
Step-by-step
- Open Settings → Customer Groups.
- Create a group with a clear name.
- Set Earn rate and Discount rate independently.
- Choose whether members may redeem points.
- Set one appropriate active group as Default.
- Assign customers to the correct group from Customer Detail.
Common mistakes
- Do not assume a 10% group Discount also means a 10% loyalty Earn rate; they are separate fields.
- Do not create a group solely for a one-off promotion that should instead be a Store Discount.
- Do not deactivate the default group as a way to stop loyalty globally; use Loyalty Settings.
Troubleshooting
- If a group cannot be selected, confirm it is active.
- If a customer's benefits seem wrong, verify which group the customer actually belongs to.
- If multiple groups look similar, review their earn rate, discount rate, redemption setting, and customer count before editing.
