POS & Selling
Hold, resume, clear, or cancel?
Choose the correct action when a customer steps away, an order is abandoned, or an existing draft needs to be reopened.
Overview
- Hold saves the current unpaid order as an open order and resets the register so staff can start the next sale.
- Resume reopens an eligible unpaid POS/confirmed online order back into the POS cart.
- Clear resets a purely local unsaved cart immediately. If the order has already been saved to the server, Clear asks for confirmation and discards the unpaid draft rather than leaving an orphaned order.
- Cancellation/voiding is a different action for an existing order and may require manager approval depending on Store POS Security.
When to use this
- Use Hold when the customer will return or payment is delayed but the order should remain available.
- Use Clear when the current unpaid sale should be discarded and not resumed later.
- Use Cancel/Void for an already existing order when business rules require an explicit cancellation rather than simply abandoning a new draft.
Step-by-step
- Press Hold to save an unpaid cart and start a fresh order.
- Open Orders/Drafts to find the held/open order and Resume it.
- Use Clear for an unwanted cart; confirm the discard prompt when MiniTill has already created a server-backed draft.
- If the order has an active payment attempt, resolve/cancel/abandon that payment state before attempting order cancellation.
Common mistakes
- Do not press Clear on an order you intend to resume.
- Do not create a duplicate order because you forgot where a held order went; check Draft/Open orders first.
- Do not cancel an order while a card/payment attempt may still be processing.
Troubleshooting
- If an order cannot be resumed, it may already be paid, be an unconfirmed online order, or be a marketplace/imported order that uses a different operational flow.
- If Clear is blocked, resolve any active submission/payment recovery state first.
- If cancellation asks for a PIN, the Store's POS Security policy requires authorised manager approval.
