Apply discounts correctly
Use order or item discounts, understand fixed/percentage/variable amounts, and know when manager approval may be required.
Overview
- MiniTill supports configured cashier-selected discounts that can apply to the whole Order, an individual Item, or both depending on the discount definition.
- Customer Group discounts are a separate customer-driven rule and should not be confused with manually selecting a Discount from the POS.
- Discount types can be Percentage, Fixed Amount, or Variable Amount. Variable Amount asks the cashier for the actual value to apply.
- The server recalculates the authoritative order total after discounts so payment uses the real post-discount balance.
- Store POS Security may require manager PIN approval for discounts always, above a percentage threshold, or above an amount threshold.
When to use this
- Use an Item discount when only one line is discounted and an Order discount when the promotion applies to the order as a whole.
Step-by-step
- Choose Discount for the order or select the target cart item first for an item-level discount.
- Choose an active discount that supports the required scope.
- For Variable Amount, enter the intended currency amount.
- Complete manager approval if POS Security requests it.
- Review the recalculated discount and amount due before Pay.
Common mistakes
- Do not use a whole-order discount when only one product should be discounted.
- Do not enter a percentage into a Variable Amount field; it is a currency value.
- Do not manually compensate for an old displayed total at payment; the server total after the discount is the source of truth.
Troubleshooting
- If a discount is missing, check whether it is active and whether its scope allows Order or Item use.
- If manager approval appears unexpectedly, review the Store's POS Security discount policy and threshold.
- If loyalty redemption is unavailable with a discount, check the business loyalty setting that controls whether redemption and discounts may be combined.
