Customer Display (CDS)
When Customer Display settings update
Know why Back Office playlist changes may not appear instantly and how the CDS refreshes without interrupting current media.
Overview
- CDS loads cached Store display settings first when available, then checks the cloud settings endpoint for updates.
- The current production refresh loop backs off to roughly five minutes after a successful settings fetch; staging refreshes much more frequently for development.
- A routine refresh preserves the current valid media/message position where possible rather than jumping back to the first slide.
- New/changed media is cached before the refreshed playlist replaces the live settings.
When to use this
- Use this knowledge when a manager saves a new promotion and expects every physical CDS to change immediately.
Step-by-step
- Save the Customer Display settings.
- Keep the CDS app running and connected to the internet for the settings/media refresh.
- Allow several minutes in production for routine refresh when there is no reason to restart the app.
- Verify the content after the new files finish caching.
Common mistakes
- Do not repeatedly re-upload the same media because the screen did not change within a few seconds.
- Do not expect changing the playlist to restart the current media instantly; continuity is intentional where possible.
Troubleshooting
- If a production CDS still has not updated after a reasonable refresh period, verify internet access and that you edited the correct Store.
- If only one file is missing, inspect that media asset/upload rather than deleting the whole playlist.
