Recover an uncertain payment
Use recovery when the POS, network, or terminal was interrupted so a customer is not charged twice.
Overview
- An uncertain payment is not the same as a failed payment. The provider may have processed money even if MiniTill did not receive the final response.
- MiniTill persists provider/payment-attempt state and exposes recovery/status actions so staff can reconcile the existing transaction.
- While an active Windcave transaction is unresolved, MiniTill blocks conflicting new payments on that register/store context.
- Cancel and manager-authorised abandon are recovery tools, not shortcuts to erase evidence of an unknown transaction.
When to use this
- Use recovery after an app/browser restart, network interruption, timeout, terminal disconnect, or any situation where the customer's charge result is not certain.
Step-by-step
- Stop before taking another payment.
- Check the physical terminal and MiniTill recovery panel/status.
- Use Check/recover to confirm the final payment result.
- Use provider Cancel only where supported and appropriate.
- Use an authorised Abandon path only when the workflow confirms the terminal/provider is no longer processing and the store's security rules allow it.
- Reload the order and verify completed payments and the remaining balance before collecting any more money.
Common mistakes
- Do not assume timeout means no charge.
- Do not create a second Card payment while the first attempt is unresolved.
- Do not delete/clear the order to hide a recovery state.
Troubleshooting
- If recovery still shows PENDING/UNKNOWN, keep the transaction isolated and continue status checking rather than charging again.
- If recovery reports APPROVED, use that approved Payment and collect only any true remaining balance.
- If recovery reports definite failure/cancellation, a new payment can be started when MiniTill releases the blocking state.
